Sometimes, all a client needs is a hug—after a h Sometimes, all a client needs is a hug—after a hard session, a tough week, or when emotions feel too heavy to carry alone. A hug can be a powerful, human way to show support and connection.

However, in therapy, boundaries are essential. While physical gestures like hugs can be meaningful, they require careful thought. Every client is different—what feels comforting for one person might feel overwhelming or intrusive for another. As therapists, it’s our responsibility to assess the moment: Is this what the client truly needs? Will this help or complicate their healing journey?

Boundaries don’t exist to create distance; they exist to protect the safety and trust we’ve built in the therapeutic space. Sometimes a validating word, a nod of understanding, or simply being present in their pain can offer just as much comfort as a hug ever could. It’s not about what we want to do—it’s about what best serves the client in that moment.

It’s not uncommon, especially for younger client It’s not uncommon, especially for younger clients, to feel a strong connection with their therapist and wonder if that connection could extend outside of therapy. This happens because therapy creates a safe, non-judgmental space, which can feel similar to the bond of a close friendship.

While it’s flattering and meaningful to know clients value the connection, professional boundaries are in place to maintain the integrity of the therapeutic process. These boundaries help ensure therapy remains a safe and productive space for growth and healing.

As a therapist, hearing this sentiment is a sign that trust and rapport have been built, which is essential for effective therapy. But the best way to honor that connection is by keeping it within the professional context.

Imposter syndrome can feel like an invisible weigh Imposter syndrome can feel like an invisible weight, holding us back from embracing the things we’ve worked hard for. Often, it’s not our skills or accomplishments in question, but an internalized story we carry—the idea that we’re somehow ‘faking it,’ despite evidence to the contrary.

For many of us, these thoughts come from deep-seated beliefs formed long ago, reinforced by experiences or expectations that made us feel like we had to be perfect just to belong. But here’s the truth: growth happens when we step into spaces that feel challenging, where self-doubt naturally tries to creep in.

Imagine recognizing every achievement, big or small, as part of a journey—one that deserves kindness, patience, and even celebration. Next time that inner critic gets loud, ask yourself, ‘Would I say this to a friend in the same position?’ Reframe those doubts, remind yourself that you’re not alone, and remember: just because you feel like an imposter doesn’t mean you are one. This journey you’re on? It’s valid, and so are you.

When a client drops the F-bomb in session… 😅 When a client drops the F-bomb in session… 😅

One thing I always strive for in therapy is to make my clients feel completely at ease. A big part of that is meeting them where they’re at, including matching their language and tone. Sometimes, that means I’ll loosen up and even throw in a few “choice words” here and there if it helps build that comfortable, open vibe. It might sound small, but mirroring language is a powerful way to show that this is a safe space.

And when a client swears—especially the F-bomb—it tells me they’re feeling comfortable enough to let their guard down, to speak in their most natural way. That’s always a good sign in therapy! The funny part? Sometimes, holding back my own F-bombs is tougher than you’d think 😂

A client once asked me, “Tell me a little bit mo A client once asked me, “Tell me a little bit more about yourself,” and this video is exactly what I wanted to say. I’m not just a provisional psychologist; I’m someone who loves to try new things—like flyboarding, spending time with my friends, and exploring the beautiful world around us. I wanted to share that. But every time the question comes up, I feel skeptical about disclosing too much, so I keep it brief and somewhat generic. There’s always that hesitation, that inner debate: How much is too much?

After the session, I couldn’t shake the thought: How can someone truly trust you if they don’t know anything about you? Trust is such a huge part of therapy. We ask our clients to be open and vulnerable, but when the tables are turned, it’s not always easy to reciprocate. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that being open—even just a little—can help build trust, especially with younger clients. It’s not about making it all about me. It’s about showing that I, too, am human—someone who understands what it feels like to take risks and embrace growth.

I want my clients to see that I’m not just a professional—I’m a person who understands what it’s like to step out of your comfort zone. Whether it’s through new experiences, facing challenges, or taking risks, I know the process of growth isn’t always easy. By sharing a bit of myself—like my love for adventure or spending time with the people I care about—I hope to make it easier for my clients to connect, so they feel comfortable sharing more of themselves in return.

In the end, therapy is about building a safe space, and sometimes, that means letting down a small wall of my own.

Challenging the ‘Superman’ Mentality in Black Challenging the ‘Superman’ Mentality in Black Culture 🖤🦸🏿‍♂️ | In our communities, there’s this cultural weight that tells us we’ve got to be strong, no matter what. Passed down from generations who had no choice but to push through hardship, this resilience has become a pillar of Black culture. But sometimes, that strength we wear as a badge of honor becomes a heavy mask that’s hard to remove.

For Black men, especially, we’ve been conditioned to believe that showing emotion or vulnerability is a weakness. This ‘Superman’ mentality teaches us to endure quietly, to navigate our struggles solo, and to keep our emotions hidden—even when the load feels overwhelming. Our culture uplifts resilience, and while that’s beautiful, it can also leave us isolated when we really need support.

The truth? Carrying this weight alone can wear us down over time. Suppressed emotions and unspoken struggles impact us deeply—mentally, physically, and emotionally. Therapy offers a path to process those layers without giving up strength; it’s about redefining resilience in a way that serves us. Our culture’s survival was built on resilience, but healing comes when we can also prioritize our mental and emotional well-being.

Therapy doesn’t mean letting go of strength. It means letting yourself be seen and understood without judgment. It’s about honoring the legacy of strength while also making space for growth, release, and self-compassion. We can honor our heritage, our roots, and our resilience without having to carry the weight of the world alone. 🖤✊🏿

That moment when you realize the session went over That moment when you realize the session went overtime… again! 😅 Sometimes, a session takes on a life of its own—deep conversations, powerful insights, and uncovering new layers. Time can slip away when you’re fully present and focused on your client’s growth. As much as we try to keep it within the hour (50 minutes I should say), some sessions just need a little extra space. Here’s to all the therapists who know the feeling and the clients who trust us to hold it. ⏰✨ #TherapistLife #OvertimeMoments #InTheZone #TherapistStruggles #MentalHealthJourney #Therapy101 #MentalHealthAwareness #ClientRights #TherapistTips #EdmontonTherapist #MentalHealthMatters #TherapyJourney #TherapyEducation #therapywithevan #therapytiktok #blacktherapist #therapistlife #healingjourney #wellness #mindfulness #mentalhealth
When the therapist needs a session after a session When the therapist needs a session after a session… 😅

Therapy is a space where clients shouldn’t have to worry about their therapist’s mental health—that’s not part of the equation. But the truth is, after holding space for others, therapists also need time to process and recover. The emotional weight that comes from deep, challenging conversations is real. Taking time to reflect, reach out for support, and recharge is essential to being fully present for others.

Prioritizing mental health isn’t just for clients—it’s crucial for therapists, too. Taking care of ourselves helps us continue showing up for the people who need us the most.

Ever found yourself switching up how you talk or a Ever found yourself switching up how you talk or act depending on where you are or who you’re with? That’s code-switching—a reality for many people, especially those in visible minority groups. It’s not just about adjusting to different environments, like we all do through socialization—it’s deeper. Code-switching often comes with the pressure to suppress parts of your identity to fit into spaces that weren’t designed for you. For Black communities, it’s rooted in survival, from our history to today’s everyday struggles. But here’s the catch—while it might help us navigate certain spaces, it can take a serious toll on our mental health.

It’s time to have the real convo: Why are we still doing it?

Let’s break free from the switch. Let’s create spaces where we show up fully, unapologetically.

When a client says ‘I’m fine,’ it can someti When a client says ‘I’m fine,’ it can sometimes be a defense mechanism—a way to protect themselves from overwhelming emotions or avoid vulnerability. As therapists, we learn that these words often signal something deeper that the client may not be ready to express just yet. Our job is to listen closely, not just to what is said, but to what remains unsaid. We create a space where clients feel safe enough to unpack those guarded feelings when they’re ready. Healing takes time, and it begins with trust.⁣

This can happen when clients feel avoidant or unsure about bringing something up. It’s like a protective mechanism — if there’s only 5 seconds left, you know we won’t have time to dig into it. Maybe it’s something you’ve been hesitant to talk about all session or something that feels too overwhelming.

As a provisional therapist, I get it. But unfortunately, when we’re at the end of the session, we can’t fully dive in. My focus at that point is to help you transition back into your life and ensure you feel grounded for the world outside. However, rest assured, next session, that’s exactly where we’ll start. I’ll ask for your consent to explore it further because these topics matter, and avoiding them only keeps the healing process stuck.

One of the most rewarding moments as a provisional One of the most rewarding moments as a provisional therapist is seeing a client experience a breakthrough. A breakthrough is that powerful moment when everything clicks—whether it’s a new perspective, deeper self-awareness, or finally overcoming a mental block. It can happen during a session, after weeks of hard work, or even unexpectedly. It’s often emotional and life-changing. It reminds me that growth isn’t always linear, but when it happens, it’s like everything shifts. These moments are why I do what I do 💡✨

🎥 What It Feels Like When Your Client Ghosts Yo 🎥 What It Feels Like When Your Client Ghosts You 💬🧠

As a provisional therapist, it can sting a little when a client ghosts you. We might reflect on why it happened or wonder if we could have done something differently. But here’s the thing—it’s totally okay. Therapy is deeply personal, and not every client-therapist connection is going to click. And that’s normal.

If you’re a client who’s "ghosted" a therapist, there’s no need to feel guilty. You deserve to work with someone who makes you feel comfortable and understood. Sometimes, that means walking away and finding a better fit. You have the power to prioritize your healing journey.

Being ghosted is part of the job. It doesn’t define your skill or worth as a therapist. Not everyone will connect with our style, and that’s just how it goes. It’s all about finding the right match for both parties. Keep showing up for the clients who do find that connection with you! 🙌
